For the longest time, the Honda family had lived in Hakone, it was the place where Shigeyama Honda and Sayuri Kagome had met and first resided, it was where the memories of the two had began, and where Reo Honda was born. [break][break]
For the longest time, the family had resided there, and spent a great deal of time together, until Shigeyama’s father had asked the small family to gift their home to Shigeyama’s uncle. While spiteful of the idea at first, due to how he and Sayuri had both saved up enough to get a home of their own, he agreed after a discussion with Sayuri, about how her parents would instead cover the costs of a new home in Tokyo. [break][break]
After everything was said and done, the three members of the Honda family had moved to Tokyo with the aid of Sayuri’s parents, and for a long while things were rough, so rough in fact, that Sayuri’s father had ended up purchasing a bus for Shigeyama to drive for others in order to make a modicum of income. [break][break]
After this time had passed of struggle, while Reo grew up in the care of his loving mother, she had eventually become pregnant, and the cost of living for the family had gone up again, though this time, Shigeyama’s family had chipped in, giving them enough money to renovate their home enough to make two more bedrooms by altering the current sizes of the bedrooms that were currently there, thus allowing for any further children to have a room of their own, or even a guest room should the need arise. [break][break]
Because this process was so strange, they had to hire an American contractor that was in the area, and lived in a hotel for a few months. While memories of this fade in and out for Reo, he does tend to remember the struggle, and the desperation that his parents often used to convey during that period of time. [break][break]
When Sayuri had given birth to his younger sister, it was as though everything in his life had changed for the worst. At that point in time, he could remember hearing his parents often arguing about the way that they’d deal with raising the children, his father often demanding that he raised the boys while Sayuri raised the girls, though Sayuri objected to this on a frequent basis. [break][break]
Eventually as he and his younger sister Azumi had both been put into school, and time in school for him, while fun, wasn’t the same for her. There were often times that he’d come home to find that she’d been pulled out of school because of frequent injuries, though at the time he wasn’t aware that the injuries were caused by others, and instead frequently teased her for being clumsy. [break][break]
It wasn’t until one afternoon when the pair of them were walking home that one of her frequent abusers had grabbed her by the jacket and effectively choked her as she moved forward that the pieces began to fall into place for him, and while oftentimes Reo was a silent child, this particular moment had prompted him to punch Azami’s bully in the face for acting like such an asshole. [break][break]
While normally such an action would result in expulsion from school, because they weren’t on schoolgrounds he and his sister were allowed to remain at the school, and instad the kid had wound up being taken to another school. For years he had considered this to be his crowning achievement. [break][break]
When Reo was 11 and Azami was 9, Sayuri had again gotten pregant with another child, though this new child, his younger brother Yoshito had come with a lot of complications. Firstly, he was born with jaundice, prompting both of his parents to panic about his health, then there were other complications that demanded major surgery for him, such as some of his organs growing outside of his body. [break][break]
All of this resulted in Sayuri becoming painfully depressed, and Shigeyama being overtly protective of both him and his sister, demanding that he would make something of each of their futures in the light of the incidents with Yoshito. This had been the turning point for Reo’s life, where his father had began to take over. [break][break]
While Yoshito had wound up being fine after surgery and a brief incubation period, it took years for Sayuri to fully recover from the postpartum depression that she’d gotten, where oftentimes she would abuse Azami and walk out on the family to spend days on end just missing and away from them all, forcing Shigeyama, Reo, and Azami to take turns caring for Yoshito. [break][break]
This had been a major shock to the family, as for the longest time she had proven herself to be the stone pillar that held them all together, though one day during one of these incidents she had just left, and never returned. She had sent a letter in the mail to the family, citing her reasons for leaving being that she couldn’t bring herself to care for any children after having come so close to losing her youngest child just days after he was born, and how the fragility of life had become too painfully obvious a problem, and that she didn’t want to be responsible for any children’s deaths. [break][break]
In the wake of Sayuri’s absence, Shigeyama had chosen to adhere to a new style of parenting, due to his inexperience with understanding how the children were as they grew up, and wanting to give them more structure than he had felt that Sayuri had given them, so for a while he had forced Reo to study baseball, to follow in his dreams, and become great at the sport in order to go somewhere and achieve something in life, to guarantee him a future, in spite of what Reo may have wanted, which resulted in a long and arduous battle between him and his son. [break][break]
Things were worse for his daughter Azami who had only wanted to have fun with her life, and didn’t really care for school. Shigeyama had to structure her more than Reo, in the fact that she oftentimes had tried to rebel against his wishes, ultimately it came down to a threat to all of the children. If they didn’t obey him, he would kick them out and leave them to be on their own, regardless of if they needed help or not in the future. This had caused Azami’s personality to lose it’s luster, as she had gone into an obvious depression from repressing everything she felt just to have a place to stay.[break][break]
For Reo, he had felt trapped, locked in a world he never wanted to be involved with, and he only adhered to it because he wanted to help his siblings in any way that he could, the truth was that he was a good kid, and he had friends that wouldn’t have minded if he lived with them, but the fear of what his father would do if any of the children left was too much to deal with, so he remained. [break][break]
When Reo was 17, things had began to change, while he knew he wasn’t the greatest at baseball, his father pressured and pushed for him to join the team at Kosei, and he did. He found that while he wasn’t the best, he was still able to do more than average players, which garnered him a position at the high profile school. This same year though, his mother’s uncle had passed away, and it was found that he gifted the family with a large sum of money, which Shigeyama used to get better gear for Reo’s career in baseball, pay for a better school for Azami, and start Yoshito out on a good baseball career, as well as get a better bus for his day job, and move them into a better home. While Reo was never aware of the amount of money that was gifted to his father, he was aware that it was such a high amount that his father had quit clipping coupons. This had left Reo suspicious when he was given a higher position on the baseball team at Kosei, feeling that he only deserved a second tier position, rather than the coveted first outpost second baseman position. This led to his suspicions over his father, though he couldn’t prove anything. All that he knew was that he didn’t feel as if he deserved the spot he was given.[break][break]
After a few years on the team, his father had decided that he wanted to settle in somewhere new, somewhere that he didn't feel like he was suffocated by the memories of his ex wife, so the family wound up moving to Los Angeles after taking a few courses in English to become fluent enough in it for comfort.[break][break]
After a year or so of being the top student in school at the new public school that Reo was attending, and being the best baseball player on his school's team, he was approached for various schools but ultimately chose to attend Loyola Marymount, in Los Angeles, both to follow suit of his attending Kosei back in Japan, and allowing his father the peace of mind of choosing a religious school.[break][break]
